7 Free Summer Activities – Instead of Spending Money

Free Things To Do This Summer

Summer is finally here and you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a good time! Here are some of my favorite free summer activities!

1. Arrange a Play Date

Kids don’t need big fancy excursions and activities every day…they are usually just happy to hang out with their friends! Simple play dates at someone’s house can be a fun frugal way for both kids and parents to socialize and have some fun!

2. Dog Play Date or Dog Park

The pups like play dates too! I love having doggy play dates with my friends! Max gets to run around and get his energy out and I can catch up with friends! If you don’t have a yard or a lot of friends with dogs, the dog park is another fun free activity for dog owners! When Max and I visit our local dog park there is almost always someone else there. He loves playing and I enjoy looking at all the different dogs!

3. Take a Walk

Pop in your ear buds to listen to some tunes or a podcast (here are some of my favorites!) and explore your neighborhood or parks and trails! This is a great way to get outside and get moving! I usually bring my dog Max too!

4. Go For a Bike Ride

I love living in an area near a huge trail network, but even if you’re not near trails you may be able to drive to some or bike in your neighborhood. Biking is a great workout and really helps me clear my mind! I love seeing what random things I can find to photograph along the way and I might throw a book in my bag and take a little break by a lake!

5. Check Out the Library

Many libraries have a lot more than just books! They often have events and classes as well! Also magazines, music, ebooks, computers to use. It can be a great way to find new reads and enjoy some AC!

6. Look for Free Community Events

Keep your eye out for free community events! A few years ago Max and I found out about a summer pet event at a local pet store and now we look forwards to it every summer! Max gets to socialize and play doggy games and we always leave with a ton of free samples. Community events are a fun way to get involved and meet new people who live around you!

7. Volunteer

Volunteering is free, fun, and makes a difference! It’s also a great way to beat the heat and stay indoors! Get a group together and spend some time at a place like Feed My Starving Children or Second Harvest. Clean up a park in your community. Get your animal fix by volunteering at an animal shelter. There are so many ideas. If you’re not sure what you want to do, check out VolunteerMatch.org for some ideas!

  1. We have a ton of free community events in our city! The trouble is remembering to check on when they all are! Also, we love biking in the summer. My kids always want to go somewhere and I like to just ride around and get the exercise!

    • Yeah I could understand how kids would want a destination, but I’m like you…I just like biking for the workout and the scenery!

  2. Great ideas! My oldest can finally ride a bike, so I’m looking forward to some bike rides. We also will definitely be checking out the library and having plenty of play dates.

  3. Great tips for getting out and enjoying the weather without breaking the budget. I have been taking walks lately and need to dust off my bicycle!

  4. YES! I also hope to spend a decent amount of time in my apartment community pool relaxing! 🙂

  5. Great ideas! A hike is at the top of my summer bucket list. I grew up in Maine, but have never been to Acadia which is a super popular tourist destination here haha I think you have to pay for a pass, but my husband’s military so we can get in for free. We’ll definitely be doing that this year 🙂

  6. I love our local library. They have tons of great activities for the kids. We also have free concerts once a week in our area in a local park. One of my kids favorite summer activities was always to turn our sidewalk and driveway into works of art using sidewalk chalk. Once, we had gone to an amusement park one day, and the next we stayed home and played with chalk. My boys hugged me and said “This was the best day ever.”
