Simply Save Update: October 2016

Once upon a recent time, I was going to do monthly updates about what’s been happening with my life and finances. I suppose I dropped the ball on that one. Someone recently asked me how my mortgage goal is going so I figure I’m overdue for an update!

Finances

I opted not to have a garage built until my house is paid off, so I put most of the profits from the sale of my last house as well as large portions of my pay checks towards my mortgage. I’m on track to get down to 5 digits by the end of the year. That will be such a good feeling!

Paying Off Mortgage

I had my one year anniversary at work and got a raise. I can’t believe it’s already been a year! I’ve never worried too much about completing probation at a job, but after losing my last job, this felt like a milestone. Just need to keep it up. Anyway, that’s extra money towards my mortgage.

I still have my Roth IRA and 457b automatically being funded. Set it and forget it. Same with transfers to emergency savings each pay day.

House & Life

I still love my little house. I can’t believe I’ve been here 3 months already. About a month ago I had the last few projects completed. It’s a house, so there will always be more, but hopefully not for a long while! I had a storm door installed so I was finally able to paint the front door! Max the dog is doing so well with his invisible fence. I think he likes his new yard even more than the old house. He sits outside for hours hoping a squirrel will fall. I just love coming home to this place and being here!

Blue Painted Front Door

I’m back in school for a few months! I’m taking a prep course before testing for an HR certification in December. Fortunately my employer will reimburse my tuition and my GI Bill will cover the exam fees. Just need to be disciplined and pass! I’m not great at tests, but I do love learning so I’ve been enjoying class so far.

This podcast episode by my friend Jeff of Intentionally Wandering is one of the best things I’ve heard lately. Yes, there’s some swearing, but the points it makes are fantastic. And funny. I got to chat with Jeff recently and we recorded an episode of his podcast that comes out in November!

That’s pretty much it. Life is good, no complaints. Love my house, love my job. Spend a lot of time reading books and doing what I love. Doesn’t get much better than this! Hope you’re all having a nice start to fall! Thanks for reading and sticking with me through the evolution of my blog!
